What is Encaustic Medium?

Encaustic paint is made from beeswax, damar resin and powdered pigment. The word encaustic means to "burn in" in Latin, which is the process of working with encaustic because the paint has to be melted first to brush onto a surface and is then burned in - or fixed - by re-heating and fusing wax layers together.

Working with encaustic wax paint

“With encaustic I can paint many layers of pigmented wax on top of each other, building up color gradually. This lets the colors of the pigment print underneath show through and the artwork glows with color.”

Encaustic paints are solid at room temperature.

“After working all day my studio is filled with the smell of beeswax!”
